The Dramatic Fact “55 Minutes. No Script.”
I Pressed the Button showed up. The rest followed.
Saturday, I pressed a button and started talking. No script. A little countdown. No production team. Jason Stevens showed up, we had a real conversation, and nearly an hour later I pressed stop.
That is the whole story. Except it is not.
Moon Excursion
The moon stuff is just cool. So what! Enjoy it.
The Format Is the Weapon
Most Substack writers are still hiding. They write a post, schedule it, wait for the numbers. That is fine. That is the baseline. But the baseline is not where the work gets done.
Going live is different. Going live is where you find out who you actually are off the page. It is where the knowledge you have been compressing into 800-word posts finally gets room to breathe.
Jason and I talked about three things. The rise of audio and video on Substack. The cancellations hitting some accounts right now. And Iran. Not carefully. Not with talking points. Just two people who think, talking.
The Setup. Two Tools. That Is All.
Here is the instrument panel. Nothing exotic. Nothing expensive.
Zoom for the conversation. You already know Zoom. Your guest already knows Zoom. No learning curve, no friction, no ten-minute setup call before the real call. You invite, they join, you talk. The simplicity is the point.
OBS to capture and stream it. Open Broadcaster Software is free. It takes your Zoom feed and pushes it live wherever you need it to go. Substack. YouTube. Anywhere. The setup takes one afternoon the first time. After that it is muscle memory. Scene set. Source connected. Press start.
That is the whole rig. Zoom plus OBS. The conversation does the work. The tools just get out of the way.
If you are waiting for a better setup before you go live, you are waiting for a reason to stay hidden. This is the setup. Use it.
What the Cancellations Are Actually Telling You
Some accounts got hit. The conversation around it has been loud. Here is what I actually think: most of those accounts were not building a community. They were uploading a list and calling it one. They pulled their email contacts from somewhere else, dropped them into Substack, and started broadcasting. That is not how this platform works. That is not how any community works.
Substack is not a delivery mechanism. It is a relationship. The people who treat it like a mailing list will eventually find out the difference. Some of them already have.
The Hard Topic
We talked about Iran. I said what I think. Talk to the people who disagree with you. Let democracy and dialogue work. I disagree with the war. I said that. But I kept it open. No team. No flag. No performance.
That is what going live lets you do. You cannot perform for nearly an hour. Eventually the real person shows up. Your audience is waiting for the real person. They are exhausted by the performance.
The Three Moves. Use Them.
Go live before you are ready. The script is the enemy. The lighting setup is the enemy. The perfect topic list is the enemy. Press the button and talk to someone you respect. The conversation will show your audience something a post never can.
Pick one person who thinks. Not a fan. Not a yes-person. Someone who will push back a little, agree where they agree, and not fill silence with noise. Jason did that. Find your Jason.
Cover the thing people are avoiding. The cancellations. The conflict. The charged topic everyone has an opinion on and nobody is saying out loud. Your neutrality is not weakness. It is the rarest thing on the internet right now.
The knowledge that is not shining in your posts? It shines in the conversation. Every time. The format has been hiding you.
ABOUT THE 55/35 METHOD The 20-year gap is the weapon. Pattern recognition from decades of cycles applied to today’s tools and today’s speed. We move fast. But we move with weight.
