You’re Not Kind. You’re Just Tolerant.

Tolerate What Doesn’t Have a Pulse

A distinction worth making, since I wrote before that tolerance is the weak version of acceptance.

That’s true for people. It’s not true for everything.

You tolerate heat. You don’t need to accept it, understand it, or extend it any grace. It has no ego, no side of the story, nothing to be accountable for.

Weather doesn’t owe you an explanation.

Tolerance is the correct, complete response to things without agency.

People are different. A person who only gets tolerated, not accepted, knows the difference immediately. They can feel the shrug wearing a costume. Tolerance was never built for anything with a pulse.

So the rule isn’t tolerance bad, acceptance good. The rule is simpler than that. Tolerate the things that can’t answer back. Accept the ones that can. Confusing the two in either direction is where things go wrong. Tolerate a person and you’re just managing them. Demand acceptance from a heatwave and you’ll lose your mind.
